Drug Court Works!

How, one might ask, is through a multitude of reasons.

First, drug courts result in a reduction of drug usage. Drug courts test participants on a regular basis for drug usage. Therefore, those who are in treatment know that in order for them to be successful with their drug rehabilitation and in order to graduate from the drug court they must learn how to lead a life sober from drugs.

Another important factor of drug courts are accountability. Those who are in the drug court program realize that they are no longer at their own will when it comes to using. Many participants say that this factor was one of the most difficult yet needed factor on their road to recovery. Most are not used to people being concerned about their whereabouts and what they are doing. However, once in the drug court, a participants whereabouts and extracurricular activities are constantly monitored to ensure that the correct decision are being made. These appropriate decisions made by participants will lead to their success in the program and once they are out of it.

In addition to sobriety, common requirements of most drug court programs include: obtaining a high school or GED certificate; obtaining and/or maintaining employment; and developing mentor relationships within the community to sustain them after they leave the drug court program.
These are a few of the vast reasons as to why drug courts work and are great for participants. To read more, visit the San Mateo Drug Court page, by clicking here.

Taking Time at the Market

Our current fundraising campaign with Harry's Fresh Market is still going strong. Many customers who shop at the store have been donating not only dimes, but even more. That is great news for Reconnecting Families!

Members of the Reconnecting Families team have been in the market with a table set up representing the non-profit program. The table has brochures, pictures, newsletter sign-up sheets and of course a donation jar for dimes. The booth was set-up in order to raise awareness about the program and the campaign and to allow customers to actually find out what all RF does and how helpful the program is to those who take advantage of being apart of it.

RF works hard to provide opportunities to mothers and children who are in the drug treatment court program. With donations and partnerships, RF is happy to provide children with opportunities that they would otherwise not be able to have. For example, recently two children of a drug court mother attended the Athens YMCA Camp and another teenager received a scholarship to attend a ballet program in Nashville!

Be sure to come by Harry's Fresh Market next week and stop and check out the Reconnecting Families booth located next to the check-out line!

Paying It Forward

Thank you to all of those who have taken the time to send clothing, household good, and children's items for donation to the Reconnecting Families that supports the drug court program. These articles have been beneficial for mothers and children who are assoicated with the program.

Aside from these items, Reconnecting Families has had a growing number of request for household furniture. Curently, many mothers and familes of the court are transitioning into a new location since the graduation of the Drug Court program and treatment process. Supplying furniture for a new home is now a problem that many families are facing.

If you or anyone that you know have extra furniture and household items, we are currently taking the donations!

Furniture which is currently in high request include:
- Beds (twin, queen, king)
- Matresses
- Dressers
- Couches
- Love Seats
- Book Shelves
- Coffe and end tables
- Washer and Dryer
- Entertainment Stands

Please contact Brin Black with Reconnecting Families by email or phone if you or someone you know would like to donate a large furniture item such as the ones requested above.

See How Drug Treatment Court Works!

Federal programs like The Drug Enforcement Admisistration help to keep drugs off the streets and out of the hands of teens and adults. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is the premier drug enforcement organization in the world and the only single-mission federal agency dedicated to drug law enforcement. Using unique ate, disrupt, and dismantle major drug trafficking organizations and those who facilitate them,  remove drugs and violent criminals from our neighborhoods, and fight the diversion of licit drugs.

Teen drug use is on the decrease! Check out these statistics from the The Drug Enforcement Administration:

- 700,000 fewer teenagers used illicit drugs last year than a decade earlier, a 16 percent decline.
- Marijuana: Current marijuana use by teens has dropped nine percent.
- Methamphetamine: Current methamphetamine use by teens has plummeted 60 percent.
- Ecstasy: Current use of Ecstasy has been slashed by 38 percent among teens.
- Cocaine: Current cocaine use among high school seniors has dropped 38 percent, and crack cocaine use has decreased 30 percent.
- Steroids: Steroid use by teens has dropped by more than a third.
- LSD: LSD use has dropped by an astounding 50 percent.

- Workplace Drug Use: Drug use among workers remains overall at its lowest level in more than 20 years.
- Since 1988, positive drug tests have fallen by 72 percent, from 13.6 percent in 1988 to 3.6 percent in 2010.

Also, numbers released by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals indicate success among the drug court programs.

Since 1989, over 100,000 offenders have participated in the drug court system and 71% of those have either completed their program or are actively participating in one. But a less forensic viewpoint reveals an appreciated second chance for many participants according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

Summer Heat Brings New Support to Families

The start of the new summer month July marks the relaunch of a new community giving program with Harry's Farmers Market in Marietta and Reconnecting Families.

The Harry's Market DONATE YOUR DIME campaign is back!  All it takes is a simple trip to the store and a few extra dimes to make a difference.

It's easy to  get involved! Simply stop in to buy some fresh produce or any other items at the store and bring a recycled bag.  When you are checking out tell your cashier you want to donate your dime!

Reconnecting Families learned that Harry's Market chose the organization at the recommendation of the mother of a Juvenile about to graduate from Drug Court. She believes in Drug Courts and Reconnecting Families, Inc!

Harry's Market has recently been helping out the tornado relief fund due to the increased number of tornado damages and devastation.

Reconnecting Families is thrilled to be a recipient of this program beginning again this month. Be sure to check out the Harry's Farmers Market from now until September 25th to help support Reconnecting Families and the Donate Your Dime program. Also be on the look out for the RF booth that will be located periodically in the store.
